About Alasdair Babber Shah
My Background & Education
I grew up in Uganda, where I spent much of my childhood going on safaris with my family. These early experiences fostered a lifelong passion for conservation that remains with me today. I attended Pembroke House School in Kenya before moving to the UK to study at Culford School in Suffolk from 2015 to 2020. During my time at Culford, I served as a school prefect and spent two years in the Combined Cadet Force, which helped shape my leadership and discipline.
Professional Maritime Training
Currently, I am pursuing a career in the maritime and yachting industry. To build a strong professional foundation, I have successfully completed several nautical licenses and certifications, including:
-
RYA Day Skipper Licence: This certification covers my competence in pilotage, deck work, emergency protocols, and night cruising. It also includes yacht handling under power, passage planning, and VHF radio handling.
-
RYA Powerboat Level 2: This course provided me with the essential skills for self-sufficient powerboating, specifically in mooring, launching, anchoring, recovery, and high-level driving skills.
Career
Certifications & Technical Training
I hold Competent Crew and AEC 1 (Approved Engine Course) certificates from Allabroad Maritime Academy. Additionally, I am fully STCW certified, which covers elementary first aid, security awareness, personal survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibility, and firefighting. To ensure I am fully offshore-ready, I also maintain a Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) and a Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification.
Professional Experience
Race Crew | S/Y Venturoso (Beneteau First 40), ARC 2024 Gran Canaria to St. Lucia | Nov 2024 – Dec 2024
I completed my first ocean crossing with Sail Racing Academy during the ARC 2024. Over 24 days—including an unscheduled stopover in Cape Verde due to an engine fire—I significantly improved my seamanship and ability to perform calmly under pressure. This achievement was the culmination of a year of preparation and has solidified my commitment to a long-term yachting career.
Race Crew & Bowman | S/Y Escapado (Beneteau First 40.7), Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez St. Tropez, France | Oct 2024
Working with Sail Racing Academy, I assisted in preparing Escapado for high-stakes racing in the IRC 3 division. Having prior experience on this vessel, I supported new crew members and was promoted to second-in-command when the First Mate stepped up to Skipper. We competed in a massive fleet of over 250 yachts, placing 22nd in our class.
Delivery Crew | S/Y Escapado (Beneteau First 40.7) Hamble, UK to St. Tropez, France | Aug 2024 – Sept 2024
I participated in a four-leg delivery passage as a mile-builder toward my Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. As I became more familiar with the vessel’s operations, I took on more responsibility, assisting the Skipper and First Mate in managing rotating crew members and overseeing boat operations.
First Mate | S/Y Questina II (Trident Warrior 35) Lagos, Portugal to Gran Canaria, Spain | March 2024 – July 2024
I completed three months of intensive day work to prepare the vessel for passage, including dry docking, sanding, reapplying anti-foul, and raising the waterline. At sea, I served as First Mate, where I familiarized new crew with the vessel, supported the Skipper with complex tasks, and planned pilotage into marinas and anchorages. I was also responsible for directing crew operations both docked and underway.
Deckhand | Party Cruise Yacht Portugal | 2023
In this fast-paced role, I was responsible for vessel preparation, loading supplies, and managing the onboard bar. I also actively promoted and sold cruise tickets. This experience sharpened my interpersonal skills and my ability to maintain a high standard of service while working under pressure in a guest-facing environment.
Reservations Assistant/Marketing Assistant | The Far Horizons Uganda | 2021 – Present
I manage the booking of services for confirmed safaris and handle critical one- and three-month administrative checks. This role requires high attention to detail and logistical coordination within the luxury travel and conservation sector. Additionally, I have represented The Far Horizons at FITUR 2026, where I used my natural and acquired skills to exhibit and market TFH to potential customers.
Hobbies & Interests
I am an active individual with a deep connection to the water; in my free time, I like to surf and fish. These hobbies not only keep me outdoors but also reinforce my patience and respect for the ocean’s power. My creative interests include photography, playing the drums and tennis and I am a huge fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Beyond my surface interests, I am a capable scuba diver, holding a PADI Open Water license. This certification signifies my ability to handle scuba equipment, manage buoyancy, and navigate underwater environments with confidence and skill. My deep respect for marine life is an extension of my lifelong commitment to conservation, a passion rooted in my upbringing in Uganda. I look forward to bringing this combination of technical skill and environmental stewardship to my career in the maritime industry.
